Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): replace starter rope, starter rope, tie the rope

Craftsman 6.5 HP Eager 1 22" Model 917377272  circa 1998
Rope broke of at the knot. Removed 1 section of to platic cover to expose winder, but unable to lift out. How do I remove and replace rope?

On these mowers, that top plastic cover is only step one- you actually have to unbolt and remove the big metal cowling, lift it off, and the starter just lifts off. Now you can pre-tie your starter to the pull handle, thread the other end thru everything it needs to run thru, tape this end to a short piece of wire, sit down, flip the starter over, wind it up tight, feed the wire through the hole, double tie the rope and slowly let it draw it rope up.  I'm out of town all this coming week, BEST OF LUCK!
