Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Boy 2-cycle - Low Power, exhaust ports, series model

Question
Mower: Lawnboy Gold Series Model 10515, Serial 3915106 - approx. 12 yrs.
old but fairly light duty , 2-cycle 4.5 hp.

Problem: low power in higher grass.  Starts after several pulls and backfires or
spits through the carburetor during warmup.  Runs relatively smoothly.

Other info: Compression (hot) 100 lbs.  Has usually not been winterized
properly (gas left in tank).  Exhaust ports have not been cleaned in several
years.  I suspect a dirty carb or clogged exhaust ports but wonder if 100 lb.
compression is low.  Would appreciate any advice.  Thanks - Paul

Answer
 Hello Paul:

The Compression is fine (low compression is around 70psi). You are right about the Carb and the Exhaust. Also Check the Reed. A bad Reed will cause the Engine to Backfire and Spit Gas from the Carb as well as Power Loss.  Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
