Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): McCullough Tuning, adjustment screws, expert repair

Question
Thanks John for the advice.  Any sort of instruction booklet would be great.  Can I bug you a little more on this?---I cleaned the carb, I took out the square piece of sponge, and soaked it with petrol, left it to dry, and just placed it back. Is this what you mean by cleaning the carb(carburettor) and are the screws I played about with carb adjustment screws then (adjusting only for the amount of clean air I want to enter the engine?)  I thought the black smoke may have been to do with the mixture of oil with petrol, or air-fuel mix, thats why I lessened the amount of oil in the petrol, but since you've mentioned flooding, I'm beginning to think along those lines too, since I can remember pushing the primer button once too often, and seeing petrol come out through the air-carburettor passage way.

I realise it could be anything, but if you can just tell me what these screws are, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Dee

I've been having difficulty starting my grass strimmer.  It may be pretty old, but I think there is still a few years left in her.  It's a McCullough MT270, if you've heard of it.  It hasn't been started in well over a year, and I haven't really given it my full attention until now.  When it was going the last time, it needed the primer button replaced.  So I went and did that, and thats when all the trouble started.  After I replaced the primer,it wouldn't start, and intuition never told me then that I had put it on the wrong way round.  Well, not having known this and the strimmer laying idle for a year or so, I set to missing with the screws that regulate the air/petrol mixture.  The devil surely makes work for idle hands.  I regret having done this, and part of me expects that you'll advise me to through the thing out.  My arms are pulled of me, trying to start the thing and I just need someone to tell me what to do.  Either give up, or bring it to a shop for expert repair.  I mixed the petrol with a shot of oil 25/1, and now 50/1.  After switching the primer button around, I can get it started but it's very weak and doesn't sound good. I notice also alot of black smoke coming out the exhaust.  Is there a fixed setting for these screws?  There are a pair beside one another, one for the petrol and one for the air (I think.)  There is another screw just above and  I think it is for the throttle.

I think I know the answer to this, bring it to an expert, but is there anything you can recommend.  I don't want to give up on this little project.

 Hello Dee:

The Carb needs to be Cleaned and Adjusted. The Carb Adjustment is causing the Black Smoke(Flooding). Also Has the Spark Arrestor Screen in the Muffler Been Removed. If Not this Will Cause the Loss of Power too. Dont think in tearms of Age when it comes to Lawn Mowers and Trimmers. They will Last as Long as you Live if Cared for properly. If you wish to have the Instruction for Wintrizing Lawn Equipment, just let me know.  Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

Answer
 Hello Dee:

The Screws you are asking about Set the Air to Fuel Ratio. The One Closest to the Engine is the High Speed Mix and the other is the Low Speed
Mix.  The High Speed Mix is set while Reving the Engine and Turning the Screw In or out until the Engine Reves up and Smooths out. In your Case I would say Turn It in. Then Set the Low Speed Mix so when you Accelerate the Engine there is no Hesitation. Then set the Idle Screw. By Cleaning and Rebuilding the Carb, it has to be disassembled.  Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck
