Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 42A707 wont start, automotive cables, charge battery

Question
Hello, I have a 7 year old MTD 42" riding mower with a B&S 42A707 motor that will not start. Battery is new with a full charge. Battery terminals have been cleaned. I tried jumping directly from the battery to the starter with the same results(motor will crank a 1/4 turn or so & stop). I pulled the spark plugs & the motor will crank over! The only thing I can think is the starter has a shorted winding & it doesn't have a enough torque to crank the motor with the plugs in. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Answer
 Hello Anthony:

If this Mower was Starting Last Year, then the Starter may be the Problem. To make sure, Remove the Belts from the Pulley of the Engine then try to Start. If Still having the same Problem then Replace the Starter. If not Check out the Deck. If you ever have to Replace the Cables, use Automotive Cables. The Larger the Diameter of the Cable the Better the Amps can Flow to the Starter and it will Last Longer and Give Less Problems. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
