Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Dana Spicer Transaxle 6 speed installation, sears craftsman lawn tractor, hydrostatic transaxle

Question
Hello;
I have a Sears Craftsman Lawn-Tractor Model No. 917.257550 which had
a bad  transaxle.  It would slip in 4 gear. Someone said that the clutch
keys were worn out.  Instead of repairing the transaxle I purchased a new
Dana Spicer Model No.  4360-122. It has a plastic fill cap for gear oil.
What type or weigh oil and how much should I use to prime the transaxle?
Is it ok to use white plumber's pipe tread on the fill-cap?  Is there a
break-in time?  What other problems or issues should I be aware after
installation is complete?  Or can you recommend a website to read more?
Thanks
Phil

Answer
 Hello Phil:

 OK Phil, you Lost me.  The Only Transaxle you have to even think about Priming is the Hyrdostatic Transaxles. If this is a Standard 6 speed Transaxle, then it uses 80W90 Gear Oil. If this is a Hydrostatic Transaxle, It will use Hydraulic Oil. Always use thread tape. Unless you are Racing this Mower there is no Breakin Time.  Normally after 25 hrs the Transaxle will be Broken in. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
