Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Blade attachment-removable?, die grinder, vertical shaft

Question
I have a Briggs vertical shaft for a puch behind, i think its 4 or 4.5 hp. i was trying to transfer the engine to a different frame that has a drive system but i cant get the blade attachment thing off of the crankshaft. there is no setscrew like the pulley on the other engine, and i have been whacking at it and dousing it with wd-40 to no avail. Is a gear puller a needed item? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Answer
Usually a gear puller is required. Insert a bolt into the crankshaft hole, thread it in several turns then use a gear puller to remove the blade adapter.

If you have a die grinder you can also cut down the center of the old adapter but be carefull not to cut the crankshaft.  Of course the adapter will be ruined.

Let me know if this helps.
