Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cub Cadet starting, spark plug cable, cub cadet 129

Question -
I just got an old Cub Cadet 129 Hydro. (koehler 301a engine)

The person I bought it from has able to get it started (by jumping it).  Since I got it home, I have had no luck.

I emptied the gas and replaced it.
The battery is newer and fully charged.

I changed sparkplug.  I only see one spark when I test the plug against ground.  If I continue to crank the engine, I don't see any other sparks.

I have 12V at the battery.
And about 9.5 at the Coil and at the motor generator.

The motor generator turns but the engine never runs.

I'm wondering if I might have a short somewhere or could it be something else?

Hiya NIck-
Don't believe you have a short- 9.5volts at the coil is good for an older Kohler with a ballast resister between the battery and the coil.

I think you have an issue with your points.  I think on this machine they're on the side under a cover(I believe under where the carb mounts). You should pull the cover and check the gap with a feeler gage- should be .030".
lemme know what you find !

Follow-up:
Thanks Allen.

Unfortunately I'm still not getting a spark.
I replaced the points and plug and set the gaps. (.025 on plug, tried both .030 and .020 at the points)
I also replaced the condenser.

I tested the spark plug cable for resistance (almost none)

I did get a spark at the points when turning the engine over (the connection was loose:-)

Is there anyway I can test to see if the coil is failing?
Or are there any other things I can try that might help me find the problem.

Answer
Hi again Nick (sorry for the delay)
OK- First - what is the model of your engine?  I show a 301a (K301 AQS) for instance, to be a single cylinder engine of 12hp.  Check that dataplate for me will ya?

1-Test the two coil leads for equal resistance.
2-Verify point setting of .020 (oops- I said .030 earlier!)
3-Verify plug gap of .025
Tell me what you see.
