Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere riding mower 8HP rear engine, head gasket leak, head bolts

Question
I have an 8 HP B&S engine on this rear engine riding mower.  Have rebuilt carburator and it runs but seems to overheat..muffler would get cherry red and when engine is shut off it will not start again until it cools off some.  My questions is what can I do to fix this or do I still need to work on the carburator?

Answer
 Hello Ed

From what I see your engine has a Head Gasket leak. Check the Torque on the Head Bolts and if that doesn't do it  replace the Head Gasket. If it hasnt been run much with the leak the retorque will do the trick.
