Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman14.5 kohler engine 1994, aluminum flywheels, fly wheel

Question
my selenoid caught fire for unknown reasons, I want to replace the wiring that melted as well as the selenoid. One wire runs up under the fly wheel. how do you remove the flywheel? Your help would be appreciated. Do I need a special tool?

Answer
hey Tom-
Ouch- sorry to hear about that fire- & for the delay- business trip.
Flywheels are taken off by removing the main retaining hardware and using a puller, either the manufacturer's specialty tool or a large 2-jaw puller.  Sometimes you can drive a wedge under one side, placing slight tension on that side (not alot!) then tapping the rear of the opposite side with a hammer, this 'pops' off the flywheel.  Be careful- aluminum flywheels aren't all that tolerant (I don't recall what your model has).
Lemme know how it goes!
