Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman/Kohler Clutch Failing to Engage, lt 2000, cursory check

Question
We have a Craftsman LT 2000 with a Kohler 17 HP engine that we asked for from the previous owners of our home.  We took it and used it for the first time this weekend after much guessing on how to get it working since no manual was to be found and the Craftsman website did not offer manuals online.

Anyway, everything was going perfectly until my husband stopped the tractor on a slight incline.  He went to start it up and the engine turned over properly and sounds fine, the blades engage, but, we cannot get the tractor to move.  I have done a cursory check of the belts and they all seem to be properly routed and to be intact.  When you hit the clutch/brake, it appears that whatever is supposed to put tension on the drive belt is not engaging.

Since we do not have the manual, I cannot identify what needs to engage where -- can you help?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Mercedes,

Maybe a belt broke and fell off.  Check the belts again and try to watch as the clutch is released.  Look for a pulley that is not turning.  Remove the cover that surrounds the shift lever so you can see into the area under and between the seat and the steering wheel.

Let me know what you find.
