I have a 520 Bobcat skid steer loader with a 20 hp kohler engine in it. Recently the only way it will start is at idle with no choke at all. Before you had to choke it with the throttle set about halfway. The machine stays inside the shop when not in use and after it warms up a bit you can give it more throttle. This engine has points in the ignition system. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hi Gary,

What happens when you add throttle when still cold, does it stall?  If so, it may be getting too much fuel.  Is there a fuel odor?  How is the spark?

Answer
You will need to determine if you have good spark and if there is too little or too much fuel. You can add fuel to the carb's intake or look and smell for excess fuel.  A final consideration would be good compression.  Check for suction at the intake.

Let me know what you find.
