I have MTD 14.5 OHV B&S eng. model #287707 type 0220 01 code 9410134B on a MTD riding mower model #135M670G336. This engine backfires & shears the flywheel key each time I try to start it.Crank is not bent, valve lash checks correct,& valves are seating ok. The intake valve does not start to open until the piston is within about 3/4 in. of the bottom of the cylinder.Does this indicate I should pull the engine & look at the cam & associated components or is there something else I need to check? Thanks. Glenn.

Are you sure a push rod is not bent?

You can pull them out and roll them on a piece of glass to see if they are straight?

Let me know.

Push rods are not bent, what next?          Thanks.

Answer
What are the valves gapped at?

One trick you can try is to lap the flywheel and crankshaft.
Use some valve lapping compound and lap the crank and flywheel to ensure proper flywheel alignment.

What are you using to torque the flywheel nut?
Let me know.
