Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 16 HP engine dies after pushing the choke back or engaging the blades, carburation system, briggs straton engine

Question
I have  KGro 16HP Riding lawn mower with a Briggs & Straton engine. I have put new filter, spark plugs, gas filter. With the choke pulled I can start the mower but when I close the choke or engage the blades the mower dies. Could you please give me some advice as to what could be the problem and how to repair it? The mower is in very good shape, well kept and hve never been tampered with the linkeage or carburation system. Thanks a lot. your site is really good. You can post the question also if you like, I couldn't find the selection for this.

Answer
The most common cause for the problem you described is a dirty carburetor.  The carburetor is very simple to remove, dis-assemble and clean.  Clean the carb with compressed air from and air compressor and carb cleaner.  The compressed air blows all the little carb orfices clean.

The job is actually straight forward.  Just pay attention to the fuel pump side of the carburetor, if you have a fuel pump.  You will know if you have a fuel pump because there will be two lines connceted to the carb.

Anyhow, there are several small springs in the fuel pump.  Just pay attention, take your time and you should be fine.

Speaking of fuel pumps, BEFORE tearing the carb apart make sure the fuel and vacuum lines for the carb are not cracked and the ends are sealing good.  An air leak can cause the fuel pump not to work.  Also, make sure the intake manifold screws/bolts are tight and the gaskets are sealing.

Let me know what you find.
