Hi Eric,
I have a Murray Sentinel 170/107. It is 2 years old and has been running fine. But....
I was using my rideon ...engaged foot brake and jumped off to move rock...jumped back on and disengaged foot brake....smoke cam pouring out from under the seat and motor stalled.
I have had a look. Motor idles fine when foot brake is engaged but when i release it gear box pulley(under seat)wont turn and drive belt just friction burns on pulley.
Thx for your time:)

So you may have a belt problem or transmission problem.

Using a flashlight, inspect the belt and the belt guides.  The belt may have slipped past a belt guide causing it to bind.

Can you roll the mower back and forth with the transmission in neutral?  Is the transaxle a hydrostat or a 5 speed?
Let me know.
Eric

I have relaced belt. Everything is fine there.
The gearbox or transaxle is a hydrostatic.
Under the seat is a metal release bar that when you move left allows you to roll mower and when you move right makes it ready to drive.
Idle is when foot brake is engaged.
I now have it up on stand with rear wheels off.
When I start the mower.... it idles fine.
When I release foot brake... pulley works fine on transaxle.
But....when I use heel/toe pedal (forward/reverse)it makes a straining noise and axle does not move either in reverse or forward.
I hope this helps and once again thank you for your time.

If you remove the belt from the rear transaxle pulley can you turn the pulley by hand?

Have someone press the foot control to foward or reverse and then see if you can still turn the pulley by hand.

Let me know what you find.
Eric

Ok,
1st don't know what i did but have got it going twice for about 5 mtrs....reverse and forward....then it locks up again..just before it locks up I hear a clinking noise....like something locking in.
2nd pulley will not turn now(not sure if it was before)...either with brake on or brake off....or either with foot control pressed forward or backward...all combinations tried.
Thx Eric.

Answer
A couple of other items to check before we rule a bad transaxle/transmission.

Are the mounting bolts tight...I've seen this before.

Is there a brake on your transmission?  If so it may be binding.  You should see a rod and a round disc if your trans has a brake.

Let me know.
