Hi Mike

I have a craftsman chainsaw, I have adjusted the carb so that it idles and starts correctly, but when I give it the gas it bogs out.  I can get it up to a reasonable level of rpm by slowly applying the throttle but not like it should be.  I've adjusted the high speed, carb adjusted everyway I know how, all the way in, all the way out, and it seems to make no difference. Whats wrong?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I would check the in-tank filter (if equipped).  Next, add a rebuild kit to the carb.  Finally, check the exhaust port, spark arrester and muffler for carbon clogging.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael

Hi Michael and thanks,  I checked the filter, the exhaust port and muffler, they were in good shape.  I rebuilt the carb, that gave me better high end performance than before, but it still bogs out when full throttle is applied.  Not as bad as before though.  I have tried varying the gas/oil ratios within reasonable limits that did not seem to help.  I am not familiar with the spark arrestor, if you could give me a little guidance on checking that I would be very grateful.  Thanks again, the info you gave was very helpful.

Answer
Hi Mike,

The spark arrester screen in located either, in the muffler or between it and the exhaust port.  Also try adjusting the low speed mixture screw if you haven't.  The initial setting is 3/4 turn out.  Finally, try adjusting the needle lever that contacts the diaphram center disk, to allow more fuel flow.

Good luck,
Michael
