Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Power failing on Honda 5.5HP GCV160, gardenway, float bowl

Question
Hi Eric, I have a Gardenway by Troybuilt self propelled mower with a Honda 5.5HP GCV160 engine. It's a 'Type 4' which is a Automatic Choke Return/Preset Throttle. The last several times I've used it the motor revs back and forth during operation and eventually dies... I tried to rig back the automatic choke which worked for half a lawn then died again. Sometimes I notice a little gas running out where the air filter is. Oil and spark plug have been changed... could it be the carburetor? thanks!

Answer
Most likely the carburetor.  Is the air filter clean?

Many times you can remove the carburetor float bowl nut and drain the carb.  Some Honda carbs even have a drain screw on the bottom of the carb.

If draining does not solve the problem then the carb will have to be removed, dis-assembled and cleaned.

Let me know if this helps.
Eric
