Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere JS63 6.75HP, john deere js63, real option

Question
I am having trouble with my John Deere lawnmower..I thought the problem was the spark plug, but I replaced that and having the same problem...It will start and run for thirty seconds and all this white smoke will come out and then it will die...It will then not start again until the next day..I am not mechanically savvy, so taking it apart is not a real option..Any suggestions? Anything I could add to my gas to clear up the problem? Also, how do you replace the air filter (I cant even seem to locate it?)

Thanks..Phil

Answer
Hi Phil,

You will need to determine if the engine if flooding or lacking fuel.  Right after it quits, remove and check the spark plug for wetness.  The air filter is on top of the carb.  You may need to remove a cover on the cooling shroud.  The air filter condition may tell us something also.

Let me know what you find.
Michael
