Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmower will not start, fuel stabilizer, david answer

Question
I actually tried it out again without getting a sparkplug or changing the oil or gas... and it actually worked.  However, when it started again, lots of smoke was coming out of the exhaust portion of the mower.  I'm assuming the oil probably needs to be changed or something.  There were times when I wasn't able to start it again, but when I rotated the blades a couple of times, I was able to start again after pulling the cord.  Was that coincidence?

Also, due to the weather being cold these days, I may or may not be mowing the lawn one last time before winter hits.  Is it better to keep the lawnmower with or without gas in the tank during winter?  (Lawnmower will be stored in a shed).

Thanks.

David

Hi,

I have a Yardworks 6HP Quantum lawnmower.  I am having lots of problems starting it.  It was working previously when I was mowing the lawn.  When I stopped it to empty the bag, I couldn't restart it.  I added more gas, added more oil, and tried pulling the cord over and over again, but with no luck.  I checked if there was anything stuck on the bottom, but there was nothing.  I was able to turn the blade.  Do you have any ideas on what else I should check or something else I should do to get it working again?  Thanks.

How old is the fuel you are using?  If it is over a month old and you did not add fuel stabilizer to the fuel it may be bad.

Did you check for spark?  Sometimes the engine shut-off cables can stretch preventing spark.

Replace the spark plug...these fail fairly often.

Let me know if a new plug gets it started.  If it doesn't, I would drain the tank and carb and refill with fresh fuel.

Answer
With or without gas? This is debateable, but if you store it with gas make sure you add fuel stabilizer to the fuel and run the mower a few minutes to mix the stabilizer with the gas before storing.

I store mine with fuel but I make sure the fuel stabilizer has been added before winter.
