Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snapper riding mower wont start, carborator, hi tim

Question
When I turn the key, it makes a sustained racing, buzzing noise--I assume in the starter--but the engine will not turn over.  I've replaced the spark plug, cleaned the air filter, and checked for clogs in the gas line.  There is gas in the carborator.  It just won't catch.  What next?

Answer
Hi Tim,

Look at the starter's gear to see if it is turning and making contact with the flywheel's ring gear.  Check the condition of the teeth.  If the starter is spinning but not making contact with the flywheel, you can remove the starter's gear, clean and lube it with silicone or light oil.

Let me know how you make out.
