I am in the process of replacing a riding lawn mower engine and I'm told that in order to determine the correct replacement engine I have to provide the crank shaft diameter.  Can I do this without taking the engine apart.  In other words, does the crank shaft stick out of the bottom of the engine (vertical crank shaft) and will I be able to see it in order to measure it with calipers?  The engine is a Briggs & Stratton 14.5 I/C quiet OHV vertical shaft, #287707-1272-E1-9912177E.
Answer -
You can remove the stack pulley on the bottom of the engine and measure it with calipers.

You should be able to order an engine using the engine numbers.

Have you visited your local Briggs dealer?  They should have an engine sales manual with all the info you need to order a new engine.

I would also check the Briggs web-site...they have a lot of info on the site.
Let me know if this helps.

Eric,

Will I have to remove the engine from the riding mower in order to remove the stack pulley, or can this be done while still attached to the mower?

Additionally, I've tried the B&S web site, however, when I try to search for my engine through it's model/part number I get back a "can't find" answer.  I'm in the military and stationed in Belgium where finding someone who either deals with B&S engines or speaks english is very difficult and when I search the web for businesses that sell small engines the usual response is that they don't carry my engine, but recommend other engine models.  My main concern is getting a replacement engine that I'm sure will fit my mower.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer
You can remove the stack pulley on most mowers without removing the stack pulley.

Your crankshaft is a part number 690136; still doesn't help with dimensions.

I checked the Briggs site and they do not sell engines or short block directly from the factory...they say contact your dealer.  However, there is a phone number you can call that may help (800) 274-4471).  I would explain your situation to the representative and see if they know who would be able to help you out.  If the rep isn't helpful then I can see if there is anyone at the factory I still know who might be able to help out.

Why are you replacing the engine?
Let me know.
