Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): valve spring removal, valve spring compressor, briggs and stratton

Question
hi michael,

i appreciate your help with this problem.  i need to replace the head gasket on my 12.5hp briggs and stratton ohv engine.  in order to get the head off i need to remove the valve springs.   i went and bought a valve spring compressor but it works by pulling the spring back toward me ( and toward the end cap).  this seems to be the opposite of what i need to do.  dont i need to compress the spring away from the end cap?  i was told that by releasing the spring pressure off from the end cap will allow the 2 peice retainer clips to fall out.  i am completely stuck here.  can you please tell me what method, and what tool i will need to remove these darn valve springs?

thank you, jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff,

You are right, the springs need to be compressed away from the retaining clips. The compressor that you have, may be for standard valves.  Check with a tool supplier for the correct compressor.

Let me know how you make out.
