Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda smokes, piston rings, white smoke

Question
Michael,

My Honda is about 20 years old.  Still starts with one pull but is starting to spew white smoke.  I assume piston rings are about shot.  Is this worth repairing myself?  Is this difficult to fix?

Thanks,

Bill

Answer
Hi Bill,

You are correct.  I would say that the rings and maybe the pistons and cylinders are worn.  Repair or replace is always the big question.  It depends on the condition of the mower, the value of your time and the cost of parts versus the cost of an entirely new mower, that will probably give you another 20 years of mostly trouble free use.  I would replace it myself but if you have the time and ambition you could repair it.  However, you most likely will be faced with more repair as time passes.

Good luck,
Michael
