Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): engine idle, adjustment screws, tank lines

Question
I checked the throttle plate and you were right it was not closing.[ Many thanks for that answer ] I repaired the problem but it still is not idling.Lets pretend I did not get the linkage connected correctly. The top link I connected from top of gov. arm to throttle control .The spring/link I connected from last hole in throttle plate link to 2nd hole in gov. arm.Next : There are 3 adjustment screws.A small one on the left at top and another at right on top and a larger one at bottom in center[ this one adjusts the throttle speed ].What are the other 2 and what are their settings. Other than this I don't see any other adjustments.None of my nomenclature that came with my machine explains anything and there aren't any breakdown pictures.Any idea wher a person could find such a critter? Thanks again...Don ps...I hope I am doing the question stuff right

My engine was running rough  The fuel tank had dirt in it so I dismantled the tank, lines and carb.I cleaned everything and blew it out and reassembled it.Now the engine runs great but now I can't get it to idle down.It runs full speed all the time.I disassembled it and checked everything including settings and linkage and all appears ok.I have a 1998 Yard Machine with a Tecumseh 6.0 hp engine. It is self propelled.Any ideas welcome.....Thanks....Don

Hi Don,

Look inside the carb's intake and see if the throttle plate is closing, when the throttle is set at idle.

Let me know what you find.

Answer
Hi Don,

As far as the linkage, I can't direct you without seeing it.  Look closely at the holes, checking for wear areas, which may indicate where the rods went.

The idle speed adjusting screw sets the stop position for the throtle plate and should set the idle speed.  The small, low speed mixture screw, affects the idle smoothness and the idle speed.  Set it at 3/4 turn out initially and adjust if needed.  The large, high speed mixture screw, when adjusted properly provides high speed and accelleration.  Set it at 1&1/2 turns out.

A general small engine repair manual may be some help.

Good luck.
