Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): snowblower leaking oil, craftsman snowblower, piston rings

Question
Michael,
I just got an old craftsman snowblower with a 10hp tecumseh running after years of sitting. I removed the carb and cleaned it following all of the advise on the forum.  The problem is now that its running  its leaking oil out of what i believe to be the breather tube.  I tried draining the oil and refilling it to the specified level, but it still leaking oil out of the hose and the cover.  What could be causing this and how do i correct the problem.  Thank you

Answer
Hi Geoff,

If it leaks only while running, I suspect that the crankcase is getting overpressurized from compression blow by.  After some running time, the piston rings may re-seat and the compression might improve.  You can run it and see, or do a compression test now.

Let me know what you find.
Michael
