Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray Riding Lawn Mower, cluch, wal mart

Sir,
I have a Murray 10hp 30" Riding Lawn Mower bought from Wal-Mart Model No.309029X92B MFD 4-09-03. When I put it in reverse it does not do anything, Neutral it moves forward, 1st gear moves forward but really fast... I followed the metal rod that moves when I try to change gears and I think it goes into the Transmission... Everything looked intact and tight. Will I need to take the transmission off and buy a whole new one or is there something I may be able to fix? (By the way I am a female who can repair things on my own if showed or explained in detail :-)My husband is deployed and I really would like to try and fix it on my own.)  Also, when I change gears I use the cluch but also it can be changed without the cluch.   Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Kristy,

Did this happen suddenly?  Double check the rod that comes from the shifter, using a helper if needed.  Does it look okay or bent?  Does the drive belt look good?  Remove the cover that surrounds the shifter to see under it better.
