Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower repair, spark plug wire, belt pulley

Question
I have a self-propelled, 5.0/22 in. Craftsman mower model # 917-378750. The belt that drives the wheels has broken and I don't know how to replace it. I have taken off the protective front end cover that covers the drive wheel but I cannot see where the other end of the belt fits on underneath the engine. How do I put the belt on and do I have to adjust the tension on it?

Answer
Hi Orlene,

The other end goes on under the blade.  Remove the spark plug wire and secure it, then remove the blade and also the blade holder if needed.  You should then see the belt pulley on the crankshaft.

Let me know how you make out.
