Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Small engine problem, stop screw, tool and die maker

Question
Hi Michael,

From one ex tool and die maker to another I have a question for
you.  I have a yard vacuum with a 3.5hp Tecumseh engine.  It is
very hard to start and even harder to keep running.  Aside from
changing a spark plug what should I look into?  To keep it
running requires a lot of throttling and then finding exactly how
much throttle opening to use to let it run.  The fellow who had it
before me took the rewind starter off it and flued a PVC collar on
it for using a rope start or electric drill start.  I would rather have
the recoil start or at least have it run once I have it started.
Otherwise you need a long extension cord.  Thanks for any help
you can provide.

Melvin

Answer
Hi Melvin,

Try adjusting the carbs mixture screws.  The high speed mixture screw is initially set at 1&1/2 turns out.  Then adjust it to give good acceleration and top speed while keeping the screw as far out as possible.  The low speed mixture screw is set at 3/4 turn out, adjust that, to give a smooth idle.   Set the idle stop screw to keep from stalling.

If no change, you would then need to disassemble and completely clean the carb.  I suspect dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
