Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mower blades keep turning after disengaging on Agway 11/38 rider?, jumper cable, mower blades

Question
I'm having a problem in that the blades keep turning, at a slower pace, when the deck handle is pulled back to the dis-engaged position. I have replaced the switch with same part MTD 925-080C3 but no help. I checked the switch with ohmmeter and confirm operating correctly. I'm also having a great deal of difficulty in starting the mower and thought that the above problem may be related. I have rebuilt carburator, changed spark plug, air filter, fuel filter, battery, & flywheel key checked good. I have to use a battery charger in start engine mode to finally get it going, but once started the mower runs great and idles well also.. any suggestions.

Mower Agway LT 11/38, late 80's, received used.
Briggs 11Hp I/C Model 253707, type 0247-01 code 8608 1511

Thanks,
Peter

Answer
Hi Peter,

The switch that you replaced is probably the safety kill switch and not related to the blade engagement.  The blades engage by the lever applying tension to the belt.  Check the belt as the lever is placed at both ends of it's travel and watch for something abnormal.  There may be an idler pulley or guide that is not allowing the belt to be where it should be.

If the engine runs fine but will not crank over fast, then there may be a weak starter or battery, especially if it improves with the addition of a charger.  Try a jumper cable from a car battery and if it helps, then I would replace the mower battery.

Let me know how you make out.
