Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): To disable speed governor B & S Vanguard Twin 20hp, screw plug, hovercraft project

Question
I am using a B & S Vanguard Twin 20 hp as the lift engine for my hovercraft project.

According to Universal Hovercraft (the hovercraft plan designer) I need to disable the speed governor to allow the engine to rev higher to 3,400 rpm. At the moment, the maximum rev is only 2,800 rpm.

I am new to this type of engine. Can you please let me know how to identfy the speed governor and how to disable it.

I have dismantled the air filter assy and can see the carburettor (twin butterfly). I have checked the illustrated parts catalogue but could not identify the speed governor or the connections. Can I remove the redundant parts too.

Answer
If it were me, I would leave the governor parts in place but adjust the governor to 3600 rpm.  The governor can be adjusted by shortening the spring or bending the spring arm.

The linkage that connects to the carb butterfly shaft will run back to the govern spring and linkage.

Racing go carts remove all the governor parts.  You have to split the engine and remove the internal parts and then plug the governor arm hole in the block with a screw, plug or weld it.

Let me know if this helps.
