Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): throttle problem on craftsman engine, governer, fuel flow

I have a 6 hp craftsman engine that was slow/stalling.  I removed and cleaned the carb with carb cleaner.  This has worked in the past.  Now the engine will only start/run if I use a paper clip to open the throttle fully.  This causes the engine to race, so I shut it off. The engine will not start normally. What could I have done wrong?

Hi Brian,

You may have lost or mis-attached the carb's governer spring or linkage.

It looks right according to the parts diagram.  I noticed it is very tight.  it will hardly allow the lever on the side of the crankcase to move.  Could there be an adjustment there?
Let me know how you make out.

Answer
Hi Brian,

There is an adjustment on the governer arm but I'm not sure how to set it and it usually doesn't go out of adjustment.  The throttle is supposed to be closed at start up.  I'm starting to suspect a lack of fuel flow to the engine.  Try starting it, by squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb.

Keep me posted.
