Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Huskee/Murray rider mower, huskee, keyswitch

Question
I acquired the mower from a friend, who thought it only needed a new starter. The starter was installed, but it will not start. Put in fresh gas. Pulled the spark plug & it only sparks when the key is turned off at the end of the start cycle. It turns over strong & you release the key and there is a short spark. Is the starter selenoid wired wrong? (12.5 hp - 42" cut)
Thanks for your assistance.

Answer
Hi Greg,

Sorry for my delay.  The holiday was busy here and set me back.

I would suspect the keyswitch being faulty or wired incorrectly.  If the starter cranks when the key is turned to start and stops when the key is turned to off, then the solenoid is okay.  After you get to the point where it cranks and you have spark at the plug, try to start it by squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb.

Let me know what you find,
Michael
