Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Weed Eater Stops Running, propane torch, ryobl

Question
Hi,

I have a used weed eater that was given to me.  It is a Ryobl.  It starts very well and runs for a few minutes then dies out.  It can die in idle and when the throttle is turned up.  I've checked and re-checked the oil/gas mixture.  It has a new spark plug.  Help.

Answer
If the trimmer is an older model you should check the muffler and exhaust port.  Carbon builds up over time and restricts the flow.  You can clean the muffler with a wire brush or a propane torch; heat the muffler with the torch and the carbon will burn off.

Have you checked the engine compression?

Also the carb diaphragms may be getting stiff preventing proper operation.  We frequently rebuilt carbs in older trimmers.

Let me know what you find.
