Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 6HP Just Began Smoking..., oil level, great shape

Question
Today my 6 year old Sears - always a great runner - died while mowing; thereafter blew grey smoke upon restarting. 'Any good way to determine if rings failed that quickly or a valve went? It sounded a tad loud (knocking) before this occurred...yet oil level was good.  I'd be game for a rebuild, but would appreciate guidance as to how worthwhile that might be.  THX!  Paul

Answer
Hi Paul,

If you're sure that an oil mixed fuel wasn't used or that the oil level is not overfull, then a ring may have failed.  I would do a compression test to check for that.
Whether the mower is in great shape and if you want to put time and expense into it would determine if you repair or replace.

Let me know how you make out.
