Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 18hp B&S twin charging sysem, amp fuse, stator

I have a 18hp b&s twin that keeps blowing the 7.5 amp fuse when running thus preventing the mower from starting with the key (I can bypass the relay to start the engine) but the charging system will not work until I replace the fuse-but it will blow the fuse again. I have checked the diode: resistance in one direction and not the other infers that the diode is working properly. Is it possible that the diode is still faulty when the engine is running? I have checked the wiring for possible short to ground-nothing. Any thoughts?

It's possible the diode is bad but your test says it isn't.

I would suspect a short to ground thats blowing the fuse.  The other 2 possibilities are a shorted stater or reversed polarity on the battery.

We recently ran across a battery that reversed polarity.  We replaced the battery and within a week the second battery reversed polarity.  We ended up replacing the stator and another new battery.  Still haven't figured out why.

Let me know what you find.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Finally pulled off the flywheel and found it caked up with dirt and grass. Cleaned it up, along with the stator, put it back together and so far, so good. Appreciate your help.

Answer
We had the same thing happen a few weeks ago on a rider...still haven't figured out exactly why the battery reversed polarity but we did the same thing...replaced the battery again and replaced the stator.  Haven't seen the mower back in the shop so I'm assuming the stator fixed the problem.

Maybe I should check with our Briggs CSSD and see if there has been any trending with this problem since I know it has happened at least twice.
