Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray Lawn Mower Repair, riding mower, gas cap

Question
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I have a Murray 42" riding mower with a Briggs engine. I can start the mower fine with the choke pulled out. I will continue to run for a few moments with the coke out then die, if I push the choke in it dies immediately. What could be wrong? This happened as I was mowing. The mower just sputtered out on me. I could get it to start and run for a few minutes at a time for about 2 or 3 times (trying to get it to the garage) then gegan not staying running at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Joe,

It seems that you have good spark.

Try to start it while squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  If it starts and you can keep it running by adding fuel, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.
First, check the gas cap to make sure it is venting and not causing a vacuum in the tank.  If that's okay, you will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.   A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
