Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): ring gear replacmement, briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
We have a 12 1/2 HP briggs & stratton engine in our noma mower the ring gear was extremly worn took numerous tries to get it to start no teeth left ask local dealer they said 4-6 weeks we would have to leave mower there to keep it in line to be repaired so we just bought ring gear and tried to replace ourselves (we have rebuilt 2 total engines in a toyota and saturn so have some abliltiy)  replaced ring gear and gear on starter put engine backtogether and now wont start acts like no gas check plug it is wet so gas is coming through called dealer he asked if we set the coil @ 10,000?  no idea what he is talking about then he also said we needed to time the key way on the flywheel it only goes one way to my knowledge?  can you help please when I aksed if he would please explain he just suggested I bring the mower in and he would try to get to it in 3-4 weeks

Answer
He/she was talking about the air gap between the coil and the flywheel...should be 0.010 inch.

Do you have spark?  If not, dis-connect the small wire connected to the coil and check again.  If you have spark then the coil is fine.

Did you remove the coil?
Let me know.
