Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starter cord not working, craftsman lawn mower, starter cord

I have a craftsman lawn mower. When I pull the starter cord on my lawn mower the cord comes out and recoils, but nothing happens. It seems as though something isn't catching. Do I need to replace something or just reattach something?     Thanks.    Frank

Hi Frank,

Remove the entire recoil assembly and check the operation from it's underside.  Some recoils have pawls that engage the flywheel and some have a bendix attached to the flywheel.  If yours has a bendix, remove it's cover, clean and lube it's parts with a light weight oil.
