Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S on a ariens lawn tractor., ariens lawn tractor, throttle cable

Question
I have a Old (79') ariens tractor with a B&S
engine on it. I ran it in the winter with the
snow blower attachment and the engine ran fine. Now 3 mo later I started it and I can not get it to increase engine RPM's. There is no problem with the throttle cable. My buddy tried to fix the carb, and adjusted the screws, but now I don't know how many turns out they need to be. Do you have any suggestions for finding out carb adustment info, and what maybe the problem with not getting the RPM's to increase. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Answer
Hi Andy,

The high speed mixture screw is initially set at 1&1/2 turns out.  Then adjust it to give good acceleration and top speed while keeping the screw as far out as possible.  The low speed mixture screw is set at 3/4 turn out, then adjust to give a smooth idle.  If no change, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.
You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.   A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
