Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray Tiller, tiller tines, power path

Question
I have a Murray 1.6 HP, 10" Tiller that is powered by a Tecumseh engine(TC200 2102E (B) 7029E)--(it was given to me so I have no manual)     I finally got the engine to run but can not get the tiller tines to operate correctly. When you rev up the engine to the max the tines turn but as soon as it hits the dirt they stop. There is a small lever up close to the right hand handle and I am not sure of its function. Could the gears or wheels inside the tiller housing be worn out or am I not doing something correctly?

Please help
Thank you,
Shelby Stephenson

Answer
Hi Shelby,

You will need to look carefully at the tines and the shaft that they are mounted to.  Basically, trace the power path to find the weak link and where movement stops.  Follow the handle control to see where it goes to.  It may or may not be for tine engagement.  You may need a helper to inspect, while you operate the tiller but use caution.

Let me know how you make out.
