Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S engine rebuild, john deere riding mower, pully

Question
Is there a trick to getting the pully off the crank on a riding mower? I used my puller but I started bending the pulley so I stopped. This is an 8HP B&S in a john deere riding mower.

Answer
If the pulley is extremely difficult to remove, you may need to use heat or a split puller to remove it.  If you have the engine off, I recommend you take it to a good shop and get them to remove it for you.  What has worked for me in the past (when the engine is off), is unthread the bolt about half way out and put a piece of hardwood of appropriate size down the pulley hole on the head of the bolt.  Hold the engine, by the pulley, with one hand and use a large hammer on the piece of hardwood...this can be physically demanding to do so don't over-exert yourself.  The last resort is cutting it off (torch or grinder) and replacing it, although I've never had to do that.  Hope this helps.
