Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snowblower engine dies, craftsman snowblower, carb settings

Question
Hello,

I have already got an answer from Michael before about this 5/22 Craftsman snowblower (Tecumseh Engine). See message and answer here. But he is away now, unavailable for a followup. His answer worked the carb was gummed up badly with old fuel.

But now although it starts up, I think I must have some problems with the carb settings. I can only open up the choke one notch even when it is warmed up, and never all the way because it would backfire once or twice and then it dies. Also, I can not put the throttle down to the mid or lowest position because it again backfires and dies. Essentially I keep the engine running with adjusting the choke rather then the trottle. If I attempt to get into the snow with it, the engine dies under the load almost instantaneously. Any suggestions what might be causing this?

I have not touched any of the spring secured jet screws either on the bottom of the float pan or on top of the carb. Should I? The top of the carb has two spring screws on it. What are they and which one is which?

Thanks so much!

Otto

Answer
Not to many Craftman engines have an adjustment on the carburetor bowl.  If you do have an adjustment needle there then it is a high speed adjustment.

Try turning the high speed needle out just a little, 1/8 to 1/4 turn.

Let me know if you have this adjustment and how if affects the engine.
