Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 7hp tecumseh 80s snowblower, throttle plate, snowblower

Question
Hi Michael
Just bought this snowblower, starts and runs perfect as long as the throttle is wide open, any other setting results in the motor stumbling and running rough. Removed the carb, ..cleaned all passages and reassembled with the same result. I noticed that the governer spring is the only mechenism opening the throttle plate... is this normal? The spring is very loose and is only tight at full throttle. Thanks for your help you can offer.

Answer
Hi Glen,

Yes, the spring is supposed to be tight at full throttle to regulate the power.  At an idle the governor is not needed.
I would check the carb mixture screws.  The large high speed screw is set at 1 & 1/2 turns out and the small low speed mixture screw set at 3/4 turn out.  If it still runs rough I would check the valves and do a compression test.  Finally return to the carb to look for other problems there.

Let me know how you make out, although I will be away for 2 weeks.

Good Luck,
Michael
