Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Flywheel Key, crankshaft, lawnmower

Question
Hi Marc,

I asked you about my lawnmower and you indicated that I
probably broke/sheared my flywheel key.  I'm pretty sure this is
the problem since i hit a stump.  Is fixing this something I could
do on my own?  I've researched and it seems kind of complicated
(i've read I need a flywheel remover or something).  IS this a
project better left to an expert?

Thank you!

Answer
You are correct.  Sometimes, when removing a flywheel that the key has been sheared, a puller is required.  It isn't an expensive repair (at least it shouldn't be) for a good shop to do.  I recommend you consider getting a shop to do it so they can also inspect the other things I mentioned (blade hub, crankshaft, etc)  Hope this helps.
