Question
-------------------------before your reply i rechecked my gaps and found that to be the problem, got motor running with starter fluid.Upon first use motor quit but wound run with starter fluid, so cleaned carb but no luck would not stay running.Once i recieved your reply i did notice that the head bolts were loose and was not getting the right compression. Tightend the head bolts recleaned the carb just to be safe a little stater fluid and she fired right up and ran pretty good. Also replaced the gas to.As far as a cub cadet dealer near me no. Though i did find the serial # painted over cleaned and found it to be 318-550-100/h277b the last #i believe to be the production code/date.If you have any luck finding engine size would be great help cub cadet 524 thanx

i have just changed the solid state coil and the plug but still wont run ,get spark and plug is wet with gas? the blower housing i think was replaced doesnt seem to fit fully onto flywheelcan still see part of the tooth from pull starter. is there any other numbers on this blower that can tell me what size engine it is?
its a cub cadet 524 i cant seem to find any info on this
Answer -
The engine numbers are normally on the blower housing; if it has been changed then you may not have an engine model, spec or serial number.

If there is a Cub dealer near you they may be able to help identify the engine model.

Is the gas brand new?  Can you start the engine by spraying starting fluid directly into the carburetor?
Check the headbolt torque...I found older Tecumseh with loose headbolts normally on the exhaust side.  The torque should be 200 inch pounds.

Let me know what you find.

Answer
Usually you can guess the engine model number.  The engine model number is really the only number you need to find common parts like the air filter.  The spec is more useful for finding the more difficult parts like carb parts.  For the most part Tecumseh has packaged generic kits to fit engines by model number.  The spec number is generally needed to find the correct governor spring and main fuel jet part numbers.

Do you have a local Tecumseh dealer near you?  A good dealer that wants to sell you parts should be willing to take a look at the engine and help identify a model number.

If the engine is a horizontal crankshaft type configuration then the first two letters of the model are probalby H, HH or HS.  This website gives a description ofthe model number.

Are you currently needing any other parts for the engine?
Let me know.
