Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tillers, starter clutch, garden tiller

Question
I have an old Magna American Corp. garden tiller, when I start it up I get a high pitch noise like a bering needs greasing...I had this problem before. A repair peson said a bearing needed grease..It than worked fine...but now I have the noise back and he will not tell me what he did to fix tbl...I appreciate the help...thanks John

Answer
Odds are good that the squeaking is the starter clutch binding on the top of the crankshaft. Remove the blower cover. If there is a small hole in the top of the starter clutch, try to get some penetrating oil down there. Otherwise, remove the clutch and lubricate with some oil then replace the clutch. We have a clutch wrench here '[m-and-d.com]'Item# ST-750-133 STARTER CLUTCH REMOVER

You may have to remove the clutch and clean the crankshaft post with some sandpaper and then use some 0 weight pure synthetic oil to lube the shaft.  The ZERO weight is difficult to find but they do make it.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
