Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): ignition problem, spark plug wire, high tension

I have a go-cart with a 5hp B&S.  It was given to me in a presumed non working condition.

To check for fire in the ignition wire I pulled the wire off the spark plug and looked for an arc between the wire and the Spark plug terminal while turn the engine. With the wire disconnected it the engine started, however upon pushing the wire back on it instantly died.

What would be the most likely cause of this problem?

Thank You for your time.

Did you dis-connect the high tension, spark plug wire from the spark plug itself or did you dis-connect a small wire connected to the ingition coil or spark plug wire?

If you dis-connected a small wire then the small wire should go to a shut-off switch or button.  If the engine died/stopped when you re-connented the small wire then either the wire is bad or the shut-off switch/button is bad.

Let me know what you dis-connected/re-connected.
Eric

I disconnected the spark plug wire.

Answer
The engine shouldn't run with the spark plug wire dis-connected.  In theory, it's impossible.

Check the spark plug wire and make sure it isn't pinched in the housing and the wire doesn't have any holes in it; I've seen mice chew spark plug wires causing ignition problems.

Let me know what you find.
