Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Problem of Snowblower stops while underload, briggs and straton, hp briggs

Question
8 HP Briggs and Straton Motor (1970 early 80's vintage)

Toro Snowblower

The snowblower will idle forever with no problem. When I put it under load it grunts and then continues on. The engine works fine clearing snow for a while and then just stops. It will always restart with a single pull and works, underload, for a short time and then it will stop and the process can continue. It happens independant of engine operating temp. If I tip the snowblower back, it will stop. I had the snowblower into the shop but it was not repaired completely. It was better. I have replaced the headgasket at the advice of a local B&S dealer. I put in a carburator kit (did not replace the welch plugs). Nothing seems to help. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Harry,

Usually there are two areas to check when a loss of power occurs:

Low compression, in your case due to an old engine.

A lack of fuel flow to the engine.  If adjusting the high speed jet doesn't help, then I would say there is an internal problem with the carb.  Maybe something as simple as a float that needs adjusting, to allow more fuel to enter the bowl.  The engine quitting when tipped is an indicator of a float restricting the flow.

Let me know how you make out.
