Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B & S Tractor Engine wont start w/o jump, defective alternator, air hammer

Question
I have a 21hp B&S engine that will not start without a jump.  I have installed a new battery, and the tractor started initially, but now the battery is drained, and did not recharge.  I assume I may have a defective alternator, but I wanted to see if you could give me some insight any other problems I should investigate (i.e. regulator, others).

Also, if it is the alternator, do I have to remove the flywheel to replace this.  If so, how do I remove the flywheel without causing any damage.

Thanks,

Craig

Answer
Hi Craig,

You are probably right, I suspect the alternator too.  First, I would rule out if there is anything drawing power from the battery when the key is off.  Will the starter crank the engine over after you are finished mowing but not after it sits?  That would point to a drain while not in use.  If not, then the alternator may just not be recharging the battery when the mower is running.  Some engines do have a charging coil which is located under the flywheel.
The recommended way to remove a flywheel is to use a puller.  An alternative, is to tap on the crankshaft top, with a brass hammer or use the punch tip on an air
hammer.  The flywheel will need to be held up and supported or upward pressure applied with 2 large prybars. (A 2 person job.) Care is needed so the flywheel doesn't crack or bend.  Also be careful to not mushroom over
the crankshaft top.  Install the flywheel after cleaning the tapers and re-tighten the nut to 65 ft/lbs.

Let me know how you make out.
