Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): john deere 14 sb, john deere self, gas test

Question
a neighbor gave me a 5 year old (about) john deere self propelled law mower.
it worked fine a couple of times ...
now when you pull the cord it starts every 4th or 5-th time... but it only runs about 3-4 seconds then sputters out... kind of like it's not getting gas.
i've opened the line and checked the filter as best i can.. they seem fine.
any ideas?
thanks- joe, tulsa

Answer
Hi Joe,

You're on the right track.  I would say also, that it is not getting gas.  Test this out by trying to start and keep it running, by squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  If it runs, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris, gummed fuel or water inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.  A carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
