Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Ariens mower clutch repair, friction disc, clutch repair

Question
I have an old Ariens Model 927027 rear engine riding mower. Engine is fine. It started losing the ability to go in reverse, now it won't go in any forward gear either. The drive system is a metal drive disk run by the engine which is lowered onto a friction disk (pulley with a belt-like material on the edge) attached to the gearbox. I'm assuming one or both are worn out. Which one needs to get replaced? And would any specialized tools be needed or does this need to done by a repair shop. Thanks -

Answer
It will be the friction disc that is worn out and it is a common replacement item.  On this particular machine, you will notice the drive assembly is on a carriage that bolts to the chassis of the mower (4 bolts, if I remember correctly).  First, loosen the bolts that retain the friction disc the you need to remove the two rear bolts and only loosen the front.  Then you should be able to pivot the drive carriage out enough to remove one of the end bearings so you can slide the gear shaft out of the way so you can remove the friction disc.  This is a fairly involved procedure but it can be done if you observe as you disassemble (even take digital pictures beforehand).  Also make sure the drive belt and tensioner from the engine are in proper working order and everything is clean and dry.  Hope this helps.
